When making the decision to add outdoor lighting to your home or garden there are many options as to which type to go with. You have the traditional 120 volt systems that have been around forever. There's solar lighting which is up and coming and much improved from just a few years ago. Then there's low voltage lighting that I would like to focus on today. There are at least 7 clear advantages of using low voltage lighting vs. 120 volt systems.1. Low voltage outdoor lights are much safer. You all know what happens if you cut into a 120 volt power line and you certainly wouldn't want a child to be electrocuted from an exposed cable. You don't have that with low voltage systems. They use a transformer to reduce the voltage down to 12 or 24 volts DC current. This would be similar to the electrical system of your car. So low voltage systems are perfectly safe.2. It's much easier to install or move the 12/24 volt systems since the power lines are much smaller and don't have to be buried as deep since they aren't dangerous.3. There is a much wider selection of light beams with 12/24 volt lighting, from a very tight spotlight to a wide, soft floodlight.4. You can choose from a wide variety of colors with 12/24 volt lighting. There are many advantages to this not the least of which is the ability to change the atmosphere of a particular garden or landscape.5. With 12/24 volt LED lights you won't have to change bulbs nearly as often. LED lights have a life of up to 40,000 hours vs. about 2,500 hours for standard 120 volt systems.6. You will find a much wider selection of styles when choosing low voltage outdoor lighting.7. I saved what I think is the best for last. Energy savings. LED outdoor lighting costs will be at least a third of what conventional 120 volt systems are.If outdoor lighting is something you are considering either now or in the future I would check into the lower voltage outdoor lighting systems.
